Kidnapping: Hundreds of women protest in Imo - Vanguard News

Hundreds of women in Imo state, Monday, staged a protest in the state capital, over incessant kidnappings in their community.

The women who are from Umuowa-Ibu community in Okigwe local government area also moved to the Imo state police command, where their protest letter was received by the command, Police Public Relation Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem.
The letter which was made available to Vanguard, was singed by elders, women and youths of the community, Mazi Nelson Okoronkwo, Mr. Chukwu Vin Okorie, Mrs. Helen Akazie among others.
They were embittered that the people of the community had been under intense fear, since 2015 till date, over the activities of kidnappers in their community.
They claimed that they decided to come to the police headquarters, after several reports to the police state in Okigwe, was not yielding any result.
According to their report, “It is with hearts full of sorrow and pains that we, the entire people of Umuowa -Ibu community in Okigwe LGA, wish to bring to your knowledge acts of kidnapping of our children, which has become an annual event in our community.”
As mentioned by the report on some of the kidnapping cases, “This is sin against God and humanity, it started in the year 2015, with a year and three months old baby of the family of Mr. Edwin Okorie of Umuorsu village.
“In 2016, this community again, witnessed and experienced another disappearance of a young man by name Mr. Ekene Odoemena. He was aged 50 years.
“In 2017, precisely, on the 14th day of December, another one happened. This time, it was the turn of one master Chisom Nnadi of about three years and eight months.
“The boy was in the midst of his fellow children playing when he was taken away in the afternoon of that faithful day.”
They also pleaded with the police that three suspects who had been arrested in connection with what has been happening in the community, should face the law.
Reacting, the Imo PPRO, Enwrem, told them that the Commissioner of police has received their letter and would take appropriate action in that regard.
